Just as regular physical exercises help boost your body’s health, regular mind exercises will also help boost your brain’s health. It doesn’t matter now if you’re young or old, there are so many ways to keep the mind in tiptop shape all the time, regardless of age.
Mental exercises are very good stimulants for the brain. Puzzles – lots of them can keep your brain working and working. Crossword puzzles for starters are good. You can also try Sudoku if you like numbers and you like thinking logically. There are so many word searches, word games that you can find in the bookstore or online. Do any of these mind games 15 to 20 minutes a day and you will have given your brain one great workout! Nowadays, there are those electronic, video, and computer games where you can really make those brain cells work. Going to a quiet place and finding your center as you meditate will help you keep a good balance of your physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. This will help relax you every day to keep the stress away. Meditating helps you take away the clutter in the brain and in your entire system. - Consider eating for good mental health
You need to eat for your body’s sake and for your brain’s sake. Healthy fats are needed for our brain to function well. Fish oils are great sources of these healthy fats. You can find fish oils in walnuts, flax seed, and olive oil. - Share stories with others
Talking and indulging in a nice, intellectual, and interesting conversation can help you too. Tell stories about your experiences or share you insights about current events. You can keep your mind at work if you let if weave stories from your past or present. If people respond well then you can create a good venue for mental alertness and creativity. On the average, a person watches TV for more than four hours daily. If you can turn that appliance off and just use the time to have great moments with family and friends, then the four hours will be much more valuable. Sitting in front of the TV is not giving you any benefits physically too, so stand up and turn that thing off. - Exercise both mind and body
Walking biking, or running help you pump blood to your brain. While in the process of exercising you also learn new skills – so that’s an additional exercise for your brain too. - Read, read, and read some more
Read the news daily or go to the library and borrow some books if you’re more traditional. If you have an access to the Internet you can go ahead and Google about anything under the sun that you want to read about. Become a voracious reader and learn a lot of things in the process. Reading is good for the brain – and it entertains you as well, so it’s good for your total wellness. - Learn something new every time
Getting old is not an excuse not to learn. Learning is a continuous process and you have to take advantage of that. Learn new hobbies so you are constantly updated. Learn about new things, people, or places. Just do not stop yourself from knowing whatever you can from your surroundings. There are so many resources and you have so much more to learn about. A routine will bore you so from time to time, do something different, something new. Go on a holiday with your loved ones or go solo if you want. Explore the world and be more adventurous. If you can’t travel too far, just induce little changes in your routines – use new route on your way home from the supermarket or church, for example.
